We are now taking applications for the second round of annual Jack Hazard Fellowships. Summer 2023 Fellowships of $5,000 each will be awarded to full-time educators who are creative writers teaching in accredited high schools in the United States. In Summer 2022, NewLit awarded eight $5,000 fellowships to California teachers. Applications close January 4, 2023 at 11:59PM PST; ten to twelve Summer 2023 recipients are expected to be announced in March 2023. Jack Hazard Fellows are talented writers who teach in secondary schools. These writers-who-teach inspire their students, high schools, and communities, and provide a professional model of writers working to find meaning and to create art in chaotic times. With these fellowships, NewLit celebrates teachers’ life-changing contributions and gives them public acknowledgement along with much-needed freedom to devote to their own writing.

Lauren Groff’s Dazzling JCO Residency
in the Bay Area

No exaggeration: Everywhere the 2022 JCO Prize Winner appeared proved to be an epic event. We all felt fortunate to hear Lauren read and speak, to bask in her open-hearted, illuminating, brilliant presence. If you were a student in one of the classes she taught, if you heard her in the Fife Room at Cal, if you attended one of her independent bookstore occasions, or if you had the opportunity to engage with her one-on-one in Berkeley or elsewhere, you know exactly what we mean. Introducing (drum roll, please) Giovanna Lomanto, our new Assistant Director.

We are all very much looking forward to working with Giovanna, who has hit the ground running this month. Here is a brief bio:
|
Giovanna Lomanto is an Oakland-based poet who, as a result of her hometown allegiances, is a(n often very sad) fan of the Sacramento Kings. An alumnus of U.C. Berkeley’s English Department and an MFA candidate at NYU's low-residency program, her work has been featured in KALW, the Worth-Ryder Art Gallery, the SFMOMA archive, and various literary magazines. She is the author of two poetry collections as well as a poetry box/art edition, and serves poetry reader at The Adroit Journal,while simultaneously running The Living Room Series & Salon. Her previous work experience involves working with Bay Area nonprofits like LEAP Arts in Education, Chapter 510, the UC Press, and the Bay Area Book Festival. |
