Announcing the 2022 Jack Hazard Fellowship Recipients

The New Literary Project is proud to announce the recipients of the inaugural 2022 Jack Hazard Fellowship for Creative Writers Teaching High School. Eight fellows will receive $5,000 over the course of Summer 2022 in support of an ongoing project of fiction, creative nonfiction, or memoir. An honorary ninth fellow has also been named.

Kevin Allardice — Albany High School, Albany, CA
Julie T. Anderson (Honorary) — The College Preparatory School, Oakland, CA
Armando Batista — Pacific Ridge School, Carlsbad, CA
Adam O. Davis — The Bishop’s School, La Jolla, CA
Sheila Madary — St. Mary’s High School, Stockton, CA
Molly Montgomery — Emery High School, Emeryville, CA
Mehnaz Sahibzada — New Roads School, Santa Monica, CA
Tori Sciacca — Richmond High School, Richmond, CA
Andy Spear —Head-Royce School, Oakland, CA

These fellows are full-time, current instructors in an accredited California high school (grades 9-12, teaching in this 2021-22 academic year), and are contracted to return to their schools in Fall 2022. In subsequent years we will consider applications from writers who teach high school anywhere in the United States. The New Literary Project celebrates their life-changing contributions, and gives them widespread public acknowledgement along with much-needed freedom to devote to their own writing. For many writers who teach full time, that’s what summer is for.
