Why NewLit?

NewLit has been mixing it up since 2015. The choice is clear. Fund the arts. As much as you can. Educate kids, support artists.

Yes, the planet needs rescuing, and people need food and housing and health care. The world needs all that and more. The world also needs the nourishment, refuge, and attention of the arts.

Young people who are marginalized—now speaking in their own voices. Writers now telling, and teachers now teaching, the stories of our lives. That’s what helps make democracy a democracy. That’s what NewLit is doing.

Thank you for choosing to join with us. (Not exactly an elevator pitch. Which is fine by us. Because sometimes it’s healthier to take the stairs.)

Thurs, 6 Nov: 2025 JCO Prize Winners at UC Berkeley’s Fife Room - Join Jennine Capó Crucet and Willy Vlautin in conversation on the UC Berkeley campus for a lively talk featuring two literary powerhouses. Free and open to the public. Starts at 5pm.

Sat, 8 Nov - Bookstore Appearances - Times and stores TBA. These events are free and open to the public.

Sun, 9 Nov - SpeakOut NewLit - Join in the fun as NewLit celebrates mixing it up since 2015. DJ Wonway Posibul will be spinning for the evening in a program that features 2025 JCO Prize winning authors in conversation with 2023 JCO Prize winner Manuel Muñoz—plus, dancing and delectable food & wine. Festivities take place at the Soda Center, Saint Mary’s College of California, beginning at 4pm on Sunday, 9 Nov 2025. Special Pricing for Early Adopters, Jack Hazard Fellows, Artists, Teachers, Clergy and Comp Tickets for Students.
