2023 Joyce Carol Oates Prize Longlist

Thirty-two distinguished authors have been named on the longlist for the 2023 Joyce Carol Oates Prize.

The annual award of $50,000 to a mid-career author of fiction will be announced in April 2023, the seventh such national prize offered by New Literary Project.

Previous recipients of the Prize:

T. Geronimo Johnson, author of Welcome to Braggsville (HarperCollins) (2017); Anthony Marra, author ofThe Tsar of Love and Techno (Hogarth) (2018); Laila Lalami, author of The Other Americans (Pantheon) (2019); Daniel Mason, author of The Winter Soldier (Little, Brown, & Co.) (2020); Danielle Evans, author of The Office of Historical Corrections (Riverhead) (2021); Lauren Groff, author of Matrix (Riverhead) (2022).

Jurors for the 2023 JCO Prize are Laura Cogan, Mark Danner, Joseph Di Prisco, Donna Jones, and David Wood. The jury hands up a shortlist of Finalists and the Board of Directors determines the Prize Recipient.

Jack Hazard Fellowships:
Applications open until January 4, 2023

Last summer, eight creative writers who are dedicated high school teachers from all over California basked in the warmth of a summer spent writing their own work, thanks to the $5,000 Jack Hazard Fellowship offered by NewLit. Jack Hazard Fellows are talented writers who inspire their students, schools, and communities, and provide a professional model of writers working to find meaning and to create art in chaotic times. With these fellowships, NewLit celebrates teachers’ life-changing contributions and gives them public acknowledgement along with much-needed freedom to devote to their other vocation, writing.

So this year, we are going national, eagerly opening up applications for ten to twelve $5,000 Jack Hazard Summer 2023 Fellowships for writers teaching high school in the United States.
