WORKSHOPS ARE HOME NewLit’s writing workshops provide refuge for teenagers, a thousand of them and counting. Offered at no charge every year. We promote their health and well-being. They write about bullying, mortality, violence, racism, immigration, economic inequality, the traumatic aftermath of the pandemic, and all the other serious concerns animating their lives. In a world that seems confusing, fragmented, and indifferent, they feel seen and understood. Witness in our annual anthology, Simpsonistas, how they express themselves and illuminate their lives and their families’ lives. That’s true in every venue where our extraordinary teachers from Cal and Saint Mary’s College inspire them—in Juvenile Hall, in Girls Inc. Alameda County, and many other sites every year including public schools where they feel the benefits of arts education otherwise unavailable to them.
